Thursday news update: ECW rating, Mysterio’s return, Ross on $1m giveaway, Punk and more

Thursday May 29, 2008 BY Phil Lowe

- Jim Ross has posted his latest blog update on his official website, covering a range of topics, including the much-talked about $1million giveaway. On that, he said: “The $1M promotion that the WWE is going to start soon on Monday Night Raw is garnering a healthy amount of reaction from fans and Internet types. It appears to be similar to many ratings promotions that are done by TV networks, especially in May and November, and also by radio stations, to enhance viewership.

“Many critics are blasting the on air promotion before it even starts or before the details are known, but that isn’t unusual these days.”

While Ross is more often right than wrong with his comments regarding criticism, the fact is that WWE have a PPV to push this Sunday. The “go home” show ahead of One Night Stand should have closed with something relating to the PPV, and it wouldn’t have killed WWE to make the $1m announcement next week – despite the poor rating Monday’s show delivered.

On next month’s draft lottery, which was also announced this past Monday on Raw, Ross commented: “It will be a big night in San Antonio on June 23 as the, apparent, Annual WWE Draft will be held during a three hour Monday Night Raw. I am interested in how the order of the draft will be determined and the process that will be utilized to make the selections.

“I read where the TV announcers are also eligible for the draft, which is perplexing. I can’t speak for the King, but I am personally not interested in leaving Monday Night Raw. I hope that I didn’t just jinx myself. Working regularly on another broadcast would feel strange at this stage of my game.”

- Tuesday night’s edition of ECW on Sci-Fi did a 1.0 cable rating. That’s not pretty.

- Rey Mysterio will be back in time for next month’s draft lottery. He’s scheduled to appear at a Smackdown brand house show on June 14 although he isn’t being advertised as wrestling

- Bryan Alvarez of Figure 4 Wrestling Online reported this week that Chris DeJoseph (aka ‘Fat Oily Guy’) is being moved into a lead role on creative for the ECW brand, and is pushing for CM Punk to be utilised more than he is.

If you’re wondering why Punk’s Money in the Bank win at WrestleMania 24 has resulted in very little in the way of a push in the past couple of months, depending on who you talk to, there are some in the company who still aren’t sold on the idea of Punk being pushed anywhere near the main event.

My personal take is that his current role is fine, but only if WWE are going to push him down the line. He could easily stay in the midcard and pick up the odd win here and there over the summer, and still be pushed hard and given an unbeaten run from say Summerslam onwards and appear credible in the eyes of the casual fans in time for a title shot on a ‘B’ show towards the end of the year. One of the matches I would love to see – and feel would be a huge draw – is Punk vs. John Cena at some point.
