Sunday news update: Tons of news and notes on the draft lottery, Batista, Ashley Massaro, Jim Ross and stacks more

Sunday June 22, 2008 BY Phil Lowe

- A quiet weekend ahead of Raw tomorrow night, which is the “go home” show ahead of next Sunday’s Night of Champions PPV, which we’ll have live coverage of. Tomorrow night’s show, which runs for an extra hour, also sees Vince McMahon give away another $1million, plus we’ll find out if WWE are planning to give us some fresh and exciting matches in the weeks and months ahead, depending on how the draft lottery plays out.

- SLAM! Wrestling have an interview online with Batista looking ahead to tomorrow night’s draft lottery. On the draft, Batista was quoted as saying: “Personally, I would love to stay on Smackdown. I feel like I’ve worked really hard with other guys to really build Smackdown. I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved the past two years. Smackdown’s my home and it’s where I going to stay.”

Whether that happens remains to be seen. Personally I think Batista is heading to Raw with John Cena heading in the opposite direction.

- Jim Ross has posted his latest blog, and on tomorrow night’s draft wrote: “I swear that I don’t think that even as I write this on Saturday that the draft has been finalized. If you are like many wrestling fans, including me, and like surprises then Monday night is certainly the night for you. I would wager a case of “J.R.’S BBQ Sauce” that virtually no talent knows for sure what fate awaits them come Monday night. Indeed speculation is running rampant regarding Monday’s Annual WWE Draft but that’s all it is or can be at this point….speculation.”

Don’t forget to join us for live coverage of Raw tomorrow night from 1am UK time/8pm Eastern, and if you’ve not already done so, you can check out Mark Bright’s preview of tomorrow night’s draft here at WWEPreview.com!

- Ross also commented on taping a Legends Roundtable show for 24/7 with Ric Flair, Mick Foley, and Tazz, writing: “The shows that yours truly was a part of on Thursday night are going to likely be as controversial as any ever featured on the Legends Roundtable….that is if they air close to what was actually said during the three plus hour taping session.

“No holds barred might be a nice way to describe the marathon taping session. But a helluva lot of fun, too. I am not sure when these programs will air on WWE 24/7 but I do strongly suggest you stay tuned. Without question, for my money anyway, WWE 24/7 is the best bang for your wrestling buck out there.”

Like many here in the UK, I can’t wait for the day WWE agrees a deal to make their 24/7 service available. I don’t see it happening before the current WWE-Sky deal runs out in January 2010, however.

- Get Smart, featuring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and The Great Khali, opened on Friday in the States with an estimated $13.5million at the Box Office. That was above early expectations.

- CNBC’s Darren Rovell, one of the few mainstream journalists who covers pro wrestling very well, has an interview online with Vince McMahon at this link.

- Our new MMA-dedicated site is now online at MMAPreview.com, offering news updates, exclusive analysis and commentary, and much more. Be sure to check it out!

- Since its a slow news day, for those who care, Ashley Massaro has a new, large tattoo on her body of a dragon. On her MySpace blog, Massaro recently wrote of her new ink: “the Pink and Red Dragon is me, a symbol of strength trying to weave through the untruthfullness in this world.”

Massaro has not been seen on WWE programming since Rolling Stone reported last month that the Diva was employed by a Los Angeles escort agency. On her MySpace page, Massaro said she was “beyond upset” and urged fans “don’t believe it for a second.”

- Devin Cutting sent along the following: Samu from the Headshrinkers will be appearing at the House Of Pain Wrestling Federation event in Hagerstown, Maryland on June 27th, 2008. Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka will be appearing at on July 12th, 2008. Go to www.hopwf.com for info about the HOPWF and www.prowrestlingevents.tk for info about upcoming shows.
