ECW on Sci-Fi report (airdate July 8)
ECW on SciFi – 8th July
Mike Adamle welcomes us to the show and informs us that tonight’s main event is a non-title match between ECW Champion Mark Henry and Tommy Dreamer. Out first tonight were the WWE Tag Team Champions – John Morrison and the Miz.
Morrison hushes the crowd before Miz rips on them about hurricanes, this led to a great line from John Morrison – “We don’t do hurricane charity repair work at the Palace of Wisdom”. So Awesome.
They beg for some team to set up and challenge them. They hype up the Dirt Sheet on WWE.com (which is always great). Finlay came out and told them the people didn’t want to here their rubbish, they wanted to see them get beat up. Morrison ripped into Finlay and his “mutant” son Hornswoggle (who was making his way from under the ring with a watergun). Finlay stormed down to the ring; as the Champs turned around they were met with a soaking from Hornswoggle.
They gave chase to Hornswoggle, Morrison ran right into a waiting Finlay who smashed Morrison in the ribs with his stick. Miz dodged the attack as the Tag Champs laid on the ramp.
We came back to ECW with a Finlay vs. Miz match in progress. Adamle tells us that GM Teddy Long made the match during the commercial break. Thanks Mike.
Finlay was all over Miz, Miz tried something and threw Finlay out of the ring, as he went to baseball slide him, Finlay caught Miz in the ring apron and beat the piss out of him. Miz returned to the ring as Morrison distracted Finlay. As Finlay went to make his way back into the ring Miz smashed the ‘Belfast Brawler’ in the face with his foot. Miz began to work away on Finlay’s arm by ramming it into the side of the ring and applying an arm lock. Finlay tried to break free but Miz caught Finlay in a beautiful float over arm ringer.
The crowd were going wild for Finlay as Miz continued to beat the tar out of his arm. Finlay managed to perform a backdrop on Miz, he then proceeded to kill Miz with clotheslines, these were brutal. Morrison grabbed the stick from Finlay, but Hornswoggle booted Morrison in the face. Miz dragged the mutant into the ring but Hornswoggle was able to escape a beating from Miz. Miz turned right into a Celtic Cross which gave Finlay the win
The progress Miz has made in 3 years has been amazing, hell, even in the past year the progress Miz has made is amazing. Miz does basic wrestling so well which makes for a fun TV match, this was no different. Good match.
Teddy Long and Tiffany (who looked hawt!) were discussing things. Estrada came in and said he really wants his job back.
Chris Harris of TNA fame knocked on the door and came in. Long said Estrada was facing this man, and Estrada asked who was he? Harris replied “Knock Knock, I’m BRADEN WALKER and I’m going to knock your brains out”. Ok. Walker, as he is now known, was wearing some generic gear and looked fat, he also has a generic name.
Walker has some cowboy music which is not a patch on Estrada’s music. As like last weeks match, the new superstar got some offence in early but Estrada cut him off. The crowd was totally dead for this one.
Armando is so loud (partly due to the crowd being dead) and you could hear him screaming at either the ref or his opponent. He’d always stop half way through his sentence and then continue. “Now…..I’ve got him!” screamed Estrada which bought the crowd to life.
Both Tazz and Adamle were referring to Atlas Ortiz as ‘Ricky’. Walker reversed a suplex and hit a cool looking flying clothesline. Walker eventually won the match with a cross body off the top, Walker landed on Estrada’s head. It seemed Walker was too early as Estrada was still trying to get up.
Tony Atlas was backstage talking to some random geek when Teddy Long came up to him. Long asked if Atlas would like to be guest ring announcer tonight to which Atlas said he’d love too, “a pay day is a pay day” he said. Mark Henry came up to Atlas and they talked about bench pressing, Atlas stuck his hand out for Henry to shake but Henry just walked off. Henry rules.
Lena Yada was with Atlas Ortiz, he said “call me Ricky”. Guess that is that then. He did some horrible promo about winning and being undefeated. This guy sucks.
We got a video package of Matt Hardy which was like his brothers Jeff’s ‘rooftop’ video from a few months back. Tony Atlas was roaming the backstage area again and saw Dreamer and Delaney. They all shook hands and Colin went “Tony Atlas! Awesome!”. Colin is such an awesome geek.
Nunzio was in the ring awaiting his opponent – Evan Bourne! Good stuff here with Bourne doing all his usual cool looking kicks and flips. Bourne eventually got the win with the best shooting star press I have ever seen. The height this guy got on it was amazing; he looks so graceful in the air. It makes Billy Kidman’s look like utter garbage.
Henry came up to Tony Atlas again and said if he wants a pay day so bad he would let Atlas carry his bags out of the arena. Henry is a great big man dickhead heel. It was Main Event time and super happy Mark Henry came down to the ring while Dreamer came out with super geek Colin Delaney.
Henry shoved Dreamer which caused Dreamer to fire up on ol’ Henry with rights and lefts; Dreamer ducked a clothesline but ran right into Henry’s huge body. Colin tripped up Henry; Henry went all “big mistake boy” and went to the outside to deal with Colin. Tony Atlas stood between Henry and Colin, after going back and forth a bit, Atlas turned on Colin and smashed his head into the announce table.
Tommy came out to ask what the hell was going on but Henry grabbed him and gave Dreamer the world’s strongest slam on the outside. The ref called for the bell, I’m guessing it was a double DQ. Atlas announced Henry the winner (?) and raised his hand in victory as ECW went off the air.
Pretty good show this week, I personally didn’t see Tony Atlas turning on Colin at the end coming but I’m all for Atlas becoming Mark Henry’s manager. Maybe the reason Atlas Ortiz is now called Ricky is because Tony Atlas is on the ECW roster now and they didn’t want two Atlas’.
Anything Morrison and Miz related rules and tonight was no different. As always please send any comments or questions to – steve@wwepreview.com.
