Tuesday news update: Smackdown and ECW tonight, Ron Killings’ new gimmick, TNA main eventer not leaving, Hollywood stars at SNME and more

Tuesday July 22, 2008 BY Phil Lowe

- WWE tapes ECW and Smackdown tonight in Philadelphia, PA. tonight at the Wachovia Center. As always we’re looking for a report/results from Smackdown and you can get in touch at phil@wwepreview.com if you’re heading to tonight’s show.

The main event for ECW is a four way match between The Miz, John Morrison, Finlay and Matt Hardy with the winner facing Mark Henry at Summerslam next month. No matches have been announced for Smackdown although its safe to assume that the show will be built around Edge and Vickie Guerrero.

We should also get an idea of who Triple H will be defending the WWE title against at Summerslam.

If they decide to bring back Undertaker for Summerslam and put him into a match with Edge, that’s fine. I really hope that doesn’t meant Triple H defends his title against Umaga though, as their matches on Raw were hardly classics.

At a guess, I can see them rushing Trips into a program with Big Show. I guess we’ll soon know.

- If WWE’s ShopZone site is anything to go by, Ron Killings will be coming in as R-Truth when he debuts. The word we got several weeks ago was that he’d be debuting on the Smackdown brand after the Great American Bash PPV, which means he could debut as early as tonight. Of course, that may well have changed.

- WWE have announced that Jenny McCarthy will be involved with WWE’s Saturday Night’s Main Event special for NBC on August 2. Ben Stiller, Toby Keith, Jewel and Billy Ray Cyrus will also be appearing as part of Generation Rescue’s campaign to raise awarness about autism.

Vince McMahon said of the arrangement: “Many of our viewers have children or friends who are affected by autism and the WWE is committed to helping fund programs for families in need and advancing research that will help this generation of children.”

In a press release issued this afternoon, McCarthy said that Vince called her to say he wanted to help. Say what you want about WWE, but when it comes to things like this and Make-A-Wish, they’re pretty awesome.

- Kaz isn’t heading to WWE, as he isn’t leaving TNA. The announcement on TNA’s website on Monday that he is leaving the company is an angle.

- MTV.com briefly covered the Bash at this link.

- Last Friday night’s edition of Smackdown on the CW Network did a 2.4 rating.

- The Sky Sports website has a piece looking at the career of Stone Cold Steve Austin at this link. Usually the site makes for a good laugh rather than good reading when it comes to WWE (Vince’s recent “injury” as legit, for a start), but this piece was actually pretty good by their standards, especially for those who haven’t followed the business for long.
