The Shoot Series – A look at a week in MMA

Saturday August 2, 2008 BY Martin Smith

Martin Smith provides you with his thoughts on the latest news and rumours in the world of MMA…

——————————–

Rumours of a Quinton Jackson fight in November raised my eyebrows this week – as I’m sure it did for readers of this site. The fight, scheduled to be against Wanderlai Silva, would be an explosive hard hitting slug-fest that would no doubt draw big at the box office. Seriously, what are the UFC playing at?

Quinton Jackson should not be in the octagon again this year.

UFC should be putting its arm around Jackson and giving him at least nine months off to sort his head out, not throwing him in the cage with a man who has just come off an impressive victory.

If UFC decide to put all there chips on to the table, then let me tell you – this is one huge gamble that might not pay off. Another loss on Jackson’s record wouldn’t look fantastic and there public humiliation of Jackson might be quite frankly pathetic. They would, after all, be cashing in on his recent problems. Expect something to be announced sooner rather than later.

Of course, one of the big talking points this week was the release of Jesse Taylor.

You all know Jesse Taylor. He’s the kid who got kicked off the Ultimate Fighter for leaving a path of destruction behind him as he tore through Las Vegas. Images of King Kong in the head right there.

Anyways, believe it or not, Taylor has got himself kicked out of the UFC again for comments made against the UFC and Jackson. Taylor apparently stated that “if he was former champion, he wouldn’t have been kicked out”. You could understand where he is coming from. After all, Rampage Jackson did ten times worse what Taylor did.

Where Taylor goes from here is beyond me. Name recognition alone should see him safely into the cage relatively soon. You can’t help wonder whether he has blown his chances of ever representing the UFC again.

The return of Gan McGee is something myself and the team here at MMAPreview certainly cannot wait for.

Having spoken to people close to the fighter, I know he is more than ready for his return to the cage. It should be something quite special.

We’ll be having an exclusive chat with McGee that you can find on this site over the next few weeks.

In terms of other interviews, we have currently got a few names in the pipeline as we begin to expand our site. Nothing is confirmed yet, but we are certainly going to keep looking.

It is exciting times for the site and we have many things planned for the future. Of course, we don’t want to go into fantastic detail about that yet, but myself and Phil have had drawn up a few ideas for the future which will be great for you – our dedicated readers.

Many long term readers of this site will be well aware that we are a still a baby site in comparison to some of the other big name MMA sites. We are still making baby steps on our way to reaching our long term goals. You guys have been sending in some fantastic feedback and we’re certainly encouraging you all to mail us and tell us what you think!

We’re also looking for a few more writers who can contribute to this site. If you want to sit here and shoot about whatever, then drop us a mail and we’ll certainly consider you.

There is no doubt in our minds – if it ain’t news, then it’s not on MMAPreview.com.
