Tuesday news update: Fears for Cena, WWE attorney calls lawsuit “bogus”, Andy Roddick vs. The Undertaker and more

Tuesday August 26, 2008 BY Phil Lowe

- At time of writing we’ve got no real updates on John Cena’s injury although from speaking to one WWE employee earlier today, there are definitely some in the company who fear that Cena could require neck fusion surgery. If that is the case, Cena will likely be out of action for around a year, which means he’d not be available for WrestleMania XXV and likely also Summerslam 2009.

As noted in our update this morning, Cena will be examined later today in Pittsburgh by neurosurgeon Dr. Joseph Maroon at the University of Pittsburgh before flying to San Antonio, TX tomorrow to meet with Dr. Lloyd Youngblood. We’ll post an update on his condition as soon as we get it.

- Smackdown tapes tonight from Pittsburgh, PA with an advertised Triple H vs. Great Khali match. If you’re attending tonight’s tapings, we’re looking for a live report and results. You can get in touch at phil@wwepreview.com.

- ECW taped last night prior to Raw. Spoilers are already up on the site ahead of tonight’s broadcast on Sci-Fi at this link. We’ll have a recap of the TV show up on the site early on Wednesday.

- Law.com this morning ran a feature on the lawsuit being filed by former WWE wrestlers, challenging WWE’s classification of wrestlers as independent contractors. As previously noted here at WWEPreview.com, it was thought that Scott Levy (Raven) was one of the three wrestlers who had filed the case. This article also confirms that Levy is filing against WWE along with Chris Kluscartis (Kanyon) and Michael Sanders.

WWE attorney Jerry McDevitt told the website that the suit was “bogus” although he would not reveal his argument, which he said he is saving for a motion to dismiss that the team will file in federal court later this week.

You can view the lawsuit in full at this link.

- How about this for creativity:

- Ahead of the launch of Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 on PS3, XBox 360, Wii and other formats later this year (new video available here), THQ have announced that the 2008 game has joined Sony’s “Greatest Hits” collection on PS2 and PSP.

 - Last Friday’s edition of Smackdown did a 2.1 rating.

- Jeff Hardy is on the poster for October’s No Mercy PPV on Sunday, October 5.

- Thanks to Devin Cutting for sending word that Spokane Arena is advertising The Undertaker & Triple H vs. Great Khali & MVP as the main event of the Smackdown & ECW taping in Spokane, Washington on October 7. Tickets go on sale on September 13.

- Sylvain Grenier and Rob Conway will be reuniting as La Resistance at the Northern Championship Wrestling event in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on August 30.
