Wednesday news update: WWE announce major TV deal, WrestleMania tickets, UK ratings, overseas tours and more

Wednesday September 10, 2008 BY Phil Lowe

- WWE yesterday confirmed a new television deal with Televisa which will see Monday Night Raw broadcast in Mexico from October 5. Raw will go out at 3pm on Sundays.

Shane McMahon, who attended a press conference in Mexico City to announced the deal, said: “WWE delivers ratings success to our network partners around the world and we intend to continue to build the same level of success with Televisa in Mexico.

“WWE is very excited to be bringing RAW to Mexican viewers who have a rich lucha libre heritage and who consistently show great enthusiasm for the WWE brand and its Superstars.”

The big news with this story is that Raw replaces CMLL on the network. At time of writing, it is yet to be determined whether CMLL will be dropped by Televisa or moved to a new timeslot. However, the network already airs AAA and with WWE joining, it may be that programming from three wrestling promotions is considered to be too much.

- Smackdown spoilers for this Friday night are up on the front page of the site.

- Thanks to Devin Cutting for sending word that WWE has announced the ticket prices for WrestleMania 25. Tickets are priced $755, $255, $155, $100, $60 and $40.

- Ric Flair was scheduled to start filming his shoot interview with Highspots.com at some point today, despite the incident over the weekend involving his daughter and her boyfriend.

- Mick Foley conducted his first post-WWE interview last night with the guys at BetweenTheRopes.com. On the circumstances that led to him deciding not to renew his contract with the company, Foley said of Vince McMahon’s approach towards his commentary: “At a certain point when you stop thinking about it and you stop being as good at it as you could be you’re doing a disservice to the guys you’re supposed to be putting over. So, I thought it was having a negative effect on me and I wanted to get out while I was still credible.”

Foley also confirmed what we reported a few days ago in that his deal with TNA is a short-term one which could lead to something more long-term if things work out for both parties.

- Kurt Angle was found not guilty in his DUI case on Tuesday. The judge ruled that the prosecutors couldn’t prove Angle was driving while he was under the influence. In a case such as this, that’s quite a major factor!

- WWE will be returning to New Zealand and Australia in July 2009 with tickets on sale from October 17, 2008.

- UK WWE ratings for the week ending August 31 courtesy of Ian Hamilton, whose Ringside Live audio show celebrates its first year on the air with a broadcast this Friday night at www.theringsidelive.com: Raw drew 69,000 on the Thursday, August 28 replay (up 14,000 viewers on the previous week). Smackown from August 29 drew 77,000 in its first airing (down 15,000). Bottom Line (after Smackdown on August 29) drew 59,000 and and Vintage Collection on August 31 drew 48,000 (up 9,000).
