Sean Sherk takes on Tyson Griffin in another brilliant fight tonight at UFC 90. Unlike the Josh Koscheck fight I wrote about in an earlier preview piece for tonight’s PPV, I believe these two are both ready to step-up and win their weight title.
With all the talk focusing on Kenny Florian being the number one contender, both Griffin and Sherk have a fantastic opportunity to knock on Dana White’s door for an opportunity at BJ Penn’s lightweight title.
The only problem is – both are lacking any real confidence to go into the fight and smash the other opponent. Griffin has become incredibly frustrating to watch, partly because this guy is so talented, that your dying for him to stamp his authority and win fights more comfortably.
The fact is, he hasn’t won a fight without the judges since September 2006. His five fights in that time have produced some fantastic displays however – he has won “fight of the night” bonuses three times.
If at his best, Sean Sherk can dominate this division again. This is one of the reasons I don’t buy this BJ Penn is the best lightweight in the history of the UFC. While Penn beat Sherk in their last fight, I don’t think Sherk was at his best at all. It was a rushed match to put a tag on the “undisputed lightweight champion”. It was after a long lay-off for Sherk also. If he gets rid of the dust, I’d love to see Sherk/Penn once more.
First things first though, Sherk has to put up with Griffin. This is going to be an amazing fight I hope. I’ve given it to Sherk by decision, but this will be close.
