LESNAR NEW UFC HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION - UFC 91 AS IT HAPPENED
Welcome to our live coverage of UFC 91 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In case you needed reminding, tonight’s PPV is headlined by a main event of UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture taking on Brock Lesnar, while Kenny Florian faces Joe Stevenson.
As always, we’re looking for your feedback on tonight’s show, either via the website or our MySpace page at www.myspace.com/ifight365.
iFight365.com’s Phil Lowe and Martin Smith will bring you live round-by-round results from both the preliminary and main cards, starting at around 8pm EST/1am UK time.
Phil Lowe (phil@ifight365.com): Welcome to our coverage of tonight’s show from Las Vegas. We’ll be starting our live coverage of what could turn out to be a historic night in the UFC in a few hours time from shortly after 8pm EST/1am UK time.
Results from tonight’s prelim matches as they happen:
- Matt Brown beat Ryan Thomas via submission (armbar) at 57 seconds of Round Two.
- Mark Bocek beat Alvin Robinson via submission (rear-naked choke) at 3min 16 seconds of Round Three.
- Jeremy Stephens beat Rafael dos Anjos via TKO (strikers) at 39 seconds of Round Three.
- Jorge Gurgel vs. Aaron Riley goes to the judges, who score it unanimously, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 to Aaron Riley.
Martin Smith will be here from 8pm EST/3am for those of you still up with us in the UK with live round-by-round coverage of tonight’s main card!
Martin Smith (martin@ifight365.com): Hey guys and welcome along to the main part of the UFC 91 coverage. If you’ve been following already, you’ll have seen our coverage of the preliminary bouts. If you want to get in touch with either myself or Phil, feel free to drop us a mail.
Indeed I am now, wait for it, 0-4 with my predictions. To be fair, two of those fights could’ve swung either way so I can take a little pride. Either way, it’s not been a good night for my predictions. Who have I tipped for the main event? Brock. Believe what you will.
It has been confirmed that UFC 91 will do a minimum live gate of $4.8million tonight.
Before the fights, I just want to add that I checked the betting prices for this event earlier today and Randy Couture is being backed more and more. I personally can’t see past Lesnar. How exciting is this though seriously? A fantastic night in store.
- Nate Quarry vs. Demian Maia opens the PPV. An interesting fight. I personally have gone for Maia, which means nothing tonight. Don’t you just love this sport? Rumour has it that the UFC might match Maia with Michael Bisping sometime late next year. Just a rumour folks. Maia is certainly one to watch in this Middleweight division. Quarry’s last fight was against Kalib Starnes, which as we all know, became a complete farce.
Maia enters the octagon to Linkin Park/Jay Z. Ah, fantastic. Joe Rogan is talking about Nate Quarry’s back problems. That could be interesting in this fight. He’s extremely under-rated in this division is Quarry. A win here would do him the world of good.
Round One: Referee is Herb Dean. Maia goes for takedown but great sprawl by Quarry. They lock, but Quarry is on his back already after a great takedown. Maia gets the back and nearly locks in a rear naked choke. Maia has awesome BJJ. Maia wrestles the back of Quarry. He uses great ability and locks in a rear naked choke to take the victory after 2:13 of first round.
Demian Maia is 10-0 after that. Interesting victory. Quarry is still very much in the pack, but a win could’ve helped him out there. Maia is fantastic on the ground and is a guy I expect to flourish over the next two years. Thales Leites versus Demian Maia next please.
- Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Josh Hendricks is up next. Hendricks is making his debut in the UFC but is undefeated in his last ten fights. This is a guy who should do well, but this division is getting really exciting. Throw in the four guys chasing the gold, the likes of Shane Carwin, Jake O’Brien, Cain Velasquez, Junior Dos Santos and many more and you’ve got a great division.
Gonzaga has an 18lbs advantage going into the fight. That could make a huge difference here. Don’t be surprised if he lands some heavy kicks here tonight.
Round One: Steve Mazzagatti is ref. Both men go at it early and clench quickly. Vicious power by Gonzaga with his punches. Knees by Gonzaga in a standing clench. Gonzaga lands a huge right hand that rocks Hendricks. Momentary pause as the ref lets Hendricks get his momentum but that punch was enough. Fights over. Gonzaga wins in 1:01 of the first round by TKO.
Interesting to see GSP and BJ Penn in the crowd. Their title fight in a few months should be awesome. GSP is my fighter of the year this year. He’s always been a solid fighter, but this year he has stepped it up.

The UFC is now showing the Matt Brown versus Ryan Thomas fight from earlier tonight. For those of you who missed it, Matt Brown beat Ryan Thomas via submission (armbar) at 57 seconds of Round Two.
Trailers are being shown for this weeks episode of The Ultimate Fighter. Interesting series this year I think. For the record, I’ve gone for Krzysztof Soszynski and Phillipe Nover to win their weights.
- Dustin Hazelett vs. Tamdan McCrory is up next. This fight will be on the main card after the Nick Catone versus Amir Sadollah fight was cancelled. Sadollah suffered an injury in the run up to this show.
Tamdan McCrory on his way out. He’s only gone the distance once. Dustin Hazelett is a Jiu-Jitsu blackbelt. Could be interesting this. McCrory is the heavy underdog.
Round One: Steve Mazzagatti is ref. Good combos by McCrory. Great kick by Hazelett and then a jumping knee. I can’t see why McCrory is heavy underdog but everywhere I read has him losing this. Stand off and not much happening. 56% say Couture will win on the text votes.
Big right hands by Hazelett but McCrory counters with an awesome leg kick. Hazelett rocks McCrory and lands him on his back. Rubber-guard and goes for a submission. Hazelett just got his black-belt and man can you tell. As I write that, McCrory taps. Awesome by Hazelett. Dustin Hazelett wins the fight after 3:59 of round one due to submission. Awesome.
Phil Lowe (phil@ifight365.com): As you may have noticed, the site is starting to run a little slow, which we’re expecting given the interest in tonight’s main event. Bear with us between now and the end of tonight’s PPV and refresh your browser every couple of minutes if you’re experiencing problems. Thanks!
Martin Smith (martin@ifight365.com): A lot of first round stoppages on the PPV part of the show. For the record, I am now 3-4 with my predictions. I don’t see this next fight ending quick, but is this a taste of things to go with the main event? Only time will tell.
We are now being shown Jeremy Stephens defeating Rafael dos Anjos via TKO (strikers) at 39 seconds of Round Three.
Right, we’re back on with the PPV folks. Thanks to Bing Shen for his feedback. Very much appreciated! Wanderlei Silva is shown on camera. His fight with Quinton Jackson should be fantastic.
Joe Rogan interviews 50 Cent. He goes for Brock Lesnar to win. Joe Rogan predicts “who knows”.
- Kenny Florian vs. Joe Stevenson is up next. Our penultimate fight now guys. Florian is heavily backed to win and while he’s the heavy favourite, Joe Stevenson is a fantastic fighter who shouldn’t be dismissed. Stevenson enters the octagon to 50 Cent. Here’s one thing. Why do fighters have entrance music AND listen to their ipod walking to the cage? Stevenson was 4/1 here in the UK at some places. That is ridiculous. This guy just got his black belt in BJJ.
Kenny Florian makes his way to the octagon. I’m certain that’s 50 Cent in the background also. Florian has risked a lot for this fight. Don’t forget, he defeated Roger Huerta to become the number one contender a couple of months back. He didn’t want to sit on the sidelines for too long so he took this fight. A loss here would hurt and would push Stevenson above him in the rankings. A victory for Florian would cement his place at the top of the ladder behind BJ Penn.
Round One: Herb Dean is ref. Very quick start. Kick by Florian and a knee. Stevenson is moving very quickly. Nice takedown by Stevenson but both men stand and clench quickly. They go down and then stand. Jabs by Florian. Kick by Florian. Nice takedown by Florian. Side control and then a full mount. He unloads on Stevenson but Joe manages to turn onto his back. Florian takes the back and locks in a rear naked choke. That is very deep. It’s nearly over. Stevenson taps. Wow. Awesome submission. Winner by submission after 4 minutes 3 seconds of the first round is Kenny Florian.Â
Wow, didn’t expect that to end quick. My record for tonight now hits 4-4. Kenny Florian will be a great challenger for BJ Penn. Randy Couture against Brock Lesnar up next.
Randy Couture wins the text vote 54% to Brock’s 46%. Very close.
I can’t wait for this.
- Randy Couture (C) vs. Brock Lesnar for the UFC Heavyweight Title is up next in our main event of the night.
“Can You See Me Now!!!” Ladies and Gentleman, it is time for our main event. The video packages are hyping the fight. This is going to be insane. New Champion? I think so. Brock is huge.
Brock is walking to the octagon relatively calm. What a huge opportunity this is. He enters to Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”. This is brilliant.
Couture walks to the cage and looks in great shape. He looks really calm. This is going to be an awesome fight. Couture is 14 years older than Lesnar and weighs 45lbs less. Unbelievable.
Brock is booed slightly. Couture is cheered heavily. No doubt who Las Vegas want to win this. They stand next to each other and Brock towers over him.
Round One: Mario Yamasaki is ref. Good knees early by Brock. Great clench by Couture. They clench. Not much happening. Couture lands a great punch on Lesnar. Lesnar goes for the takedown but an awesome sprawl by Couture. Lesnar takes Couture down and is in his half-guard. Nearly pulls off a full mount. Unbelievable. Couture gets up and grabs Brocks back. Lesnar spins him and gets him in a half-guard. Body shots by both men. Big punches by Lesnar on the ground. Couture gets off his back and they both stand and clench. Brock is breathing heavily. He’s waiting for this to end. Lesnar keeps grabbing the fence and Couture goes for a takedown as the round ends. Close round. ifight365.com scores the round 10-9 to Lesnar.
Round Two: Lesnar starts the round with a jab. Randy caught with an elbow. Randy has Lesnar against the fence. Lesnar looks tired already. Big knee and great punches by both men. Brock is cut under right eye. Couture goes for the takedown. Short punches by Lesnar in the clench. Nothing happening. Knee by Brock Lesnar. Awesome shot by Lesnar and he pounces. Hammer fists by Lesnar! Couture is trying to escape. The referee ends it. Lesnar by TKO!!
So that’s it! A new Heavyweight Champion! Be sure to follow this news over the next few days. Personally, this is huge news. Congratulations to Brock. Thank you all for following our play-by-play. Send myself or Phil feedback - martin@ifight365.com or phil@ifight365.com.
Apologies for any problems you may have had with the site. As I’m sure you can appreciate, a lot of people came to the site to find out tonights result and I’m sure you’ll agree - they weren’t left disappointed.
