Hulk Hogan’s Celebrity Championship Wrestling – Season Finale Recap
Last week, Danny Bonaduce became a two-time jabroni when he was eliminated once again. It’s now down to Dustin Diamond, Butterbean, Dennis Rodman, and Todd Bridges. One of the final four will become the first CCW Champion.
The four gather in the lounge. Dennis openly proposes that they have an all-out brawl until one remains standing. Butterbean seems to be in agreement. Brian Knobbs and Brutus Beefcake arrive to pump everyone up. Dustin is concerned about his chops and feels he has to figure some way to step it up in order to win.
The coaches take the final four to the arena, which is empty, and stand them before three judges. Hogan lays it down before them that only one can be the champion. Jimmy gets each finalist a chance to cut some kind of promo about why they’ll win. Eric then announces that they will be competing in two matches, beginning with a tag team match. The judges will chose the best two from it to compete in a final singles match that will ultimately crown the champion.
Time for training. Brian makes it known Dustin’s chops and kicks suck, so he and Beefcake decide to run him through chop school. Everyone notes how pathetic that Dustin’s hand is getting bruised from doing chops. After Dustin chops everyone, everyone gives him the receipt. And they all absolutely hurt, as seen when Brian lifts up Dustin’s shirt and displays how ungodly red his chest is.
Brian and Brutus decide to run them through working their tag match. It’s going to be double the length of matches they’ve previously been apart of. And they still have to train for the possible final match. Brian actually has some papers which run down the tag match, and it’s still confusing everyone given that they’ll be working twice as long as they’re used to.
They do another run through of the tag match. Brian makes a note to them that the match incorporates sequences they’ve done before since they started. This seems to help as they all appear to be getting it. Brian then gives them one last pep talk before they get set for the finale.
It’s match time, but we begin with the undercard match. It’s a tag team jabroni match with all the ladies from the going at it. It’s Tiffany Ziering and Candy Girl (Nikki) with Frank Stallone in their corner (in drag) as heels against The Mistress of Mayhem (Erin Murphy) and The Red Hot Redneck (Trishelle). It is very clear that Trishelle is the much better worker than everyone else in the ring. The match brutually comes to an end when Erin hits Tiffany with a flying crossbody for the win. The faces leave, Frank bad mouths the heels before they walk out on him, and then he gets chased out by the “surprise” appearance of Danny Bonaduce.
The main tag match sees Rodzilla (Dennis Rodman) and Mean Bean (Butterbean) teaming up against The Winner (Dustin Diamond) and Mr. Not-So-Perfect (Todd Bridges). Dustin and Todd play heel by immediately attacking Bean and Dennis as they are about to enter the ring. The faces manage to gain the momentum quickly and have their way with Dustin and Todd for a good while. It changes when Dustin avoids a Bean splash in the corner. Todd continues to showcase his great athletic abilities with a dive over the top onto Butterbean and later a splash from the top. Dustin even stuffs a brass knuckle into his elbow pad and uses it on Bean. Bean manages to fight back with a double clothesline and drags them over to tag in Rodman. The finish sees Rodman and Bean hit their finishers together for a double pin.
Elimination time. All are given praises for their improvements. Hogan then calls up Dustin and Bean. They did good, but not good enough and were therefore eliminated. Bean and Dustin do their reflections in the back almost immediately after. So the final match will be Rodzilla vs. Mr. Not-So-Perfect.
Todd plays heel while Rodman plays face in the main event, Brutus coming out with Todd and Rodman coming out with Brian. Todd starts out with a slap and has Rodman chase him around, only Rodman manages to catch him and go to work. Rodman works Todd over in the corner and then clotheslines him out. Todd reverses things and gets control, even driving Dennis through a table. Todd keeps the pressure on and even tries his sunset flip finisher, but then Rodman “Hulks Up,” even rips his shirt off, and regains control. Rodman hits the flying clothesline and gets the win in the match.
Time to crown the champion. The judges give both celebrities praise and Jimmy even gives props to Brutus and Brian for their part in training. Hogan takes and belt and makes his way into the ring. Hogan points out the best qualities in both, stalling before making the final decision.
The CCW Champion is Dennis Rodman.
Overview: A good enough episode with the main two matches being pretty darn decent. I have to give it to Brutus, Brian, and the UPW crew for making at least the last five guys into plausible wrestlers who could make a cut in really small independent promotions. I call bull on the final decision, though. Not so much that Rodman has done it before, but rather Todd was the better athlete. If any one from the show came off destined to be a wrestler, it was Todd. I think he’d make a great independent worker if he decides to make a go for it. Any way, good episode to cap off a great show. Easily the best wrestling show of the year, regardless of how horrible most of the celebrities were at actually wrestling. Fun to watch, everything was laid out very simple. You understood and knew each person. I hope they make another one.
Episode Verdict: Thumbs Up
