PPV Preview: WWE Armageddon
WWE’s final PPV of 2008, Armageddon, takes place tonight and as always we’ll have live coverage of the show as it happens here at iFight365.com from around 7.45pm EST/12.45am GMT.
Ahead of our live coverage, Michael Campbell, Mark Bright and Phil Lowe take a look ahead to the matches advertised for tonight’s show:
World Heavyweight Title Match
- John Cena (C) vs. Chris Jericho
Phil Lowe: The two should have a solid enough match although I don’t think Cena is yet at 100%. I don’t see either of the titles changes hands during the PPV, so having Jericho win here makes sense to send them to the Royal Rumble for the blow off for their feud. Cena losing the title so soon just isn’t going to happen, especially on a nothing PPV (a PPV without Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, JBL and Big Show as well).
Michael Campbell: NO title change. At least I hope not. I still maintain that they should not have booked Cena to win the strap at the last show, and instead chased Jericho until the Rumble. That said, there’s a small chance they might switch back again (I know - too many title changes, but the damage is already done), because fan resentment is ALREADY growing against Cena. That’s right, it’s taken less than a month - maybe two weeks - for the vocal minority to spread in numbers. Winner: John Cena.
Mark Bright: Both guys have been really strong on TV in the lead up to this match, but in Cena’s matches he’s still been very gun-shy and the extent of his recovery from the neck injury that obviously still bothers him will have the greatest bearing on the quality of this match. Jericho is an excellent heel and one could definitely make the argument that from a character perspective he’s the best thing in the WWE this year, and his more serious edge means it will actually fit him to go after Cena’s neck injury and wrestle more Cena’s kind of match.
The crowd response will be interesting as the three-hour RAW saw the first signs of a major Cena backlash and return to the split crowd reaction since his return, but then again it was Philadelphia and they have always notoriously been an asshole crowd more concerned with getting themselves over than just enjoying the shows. I think this closes the show, and Cena gets a decisive win, probably with the STFU since he won with the FU at Survivor Series.
Triple Threat Match for the WWE Title
- Edge (C) vs. Triple H vs. Jeff Hardy
Phil Lowe: Again, no title change for me. I’m sat firmly in the camp that wants the title put on Jeff Hardy, but in a three-way on a nothing PPV isn’t the time or place to do it. I can see Edge holding the belt from now through to WrestleMania, with Trips and Hardy fighting it out possibly at the Rumble (or as a result of the Rumble) to get the Mania title shot. This match really should steal the show though.
Mark Bright: This will probably be the match of the night, and is the one with the most chance of delivering as it will get all the time it needs. You would think that with Edge having only just returned from injury that he’d win the title, but that creates problems. Jeff Hardy is so over that eventually he will need to win the title to stop being seen as such a failure and a choker, and when that happens it will lead to fan apathy and they stop believing that this is Jeff’s “time.”
The ideal result here would be Edge pinning HHH, but I wonder if that’s even a consideration amongst the WWE booking team, and if HHH is in the WrestleMania main event as he invariably is then not jobbing him is actually the right thing to do. But that spot should be Jeff’s. He should win the Royal Rumble and head to WrestleMania and win the WWE Title from Edge in the main event, after it’s revealed that Edge attacked him in the stairwell at Survivor Series. But the fact they haven’t done that reveal just says to me that it’s actually not Edge.
The match should be good, we have Jeff as the incredibly over underdog babyface, Edge as the incredibly over sneaky heel opportunist who I’m guessing spends a lot of time outside and letting the other two go at it, and HHH as the incredibly over odds-on-favourite babyface. I can’t wait for this match; it’s definitely the one where I’m most intrigued by the result.
Michael Campbell: Last week, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez discussed the possibility of putting the gold on Jeff Hardy here. I think that’s utterly insane. Even Lance Storm stated this week that he has been built like he could win it. Their basis was that Hardy jobbed to Jericho on Raw, and felt that the combination of that, and his momentum last month could mean that the WWE felt he could take the loss, in order to rehab Jericho. Because then he’d be taking the title. I don’t buy that, and I tend to think the WWE don’t look back further than a week when it comes to momentum and audience interest.
Jeff’s had so many shots now, that I would only give him the win now if it was a one-on-one big match, main eventing Mania. He doesn’t lose out any momentum by dropping a bout like this, and in fact, they could make it the storyline of his eventual win - that when it’s all stripped down to man-on-man and there’s no distractions. Jeff can absolutely still go to WrestleMania and win the Gold. I’m hoping for that. And I have faith that they won’t take the strap off Edge because they HAVE FAITH in Edge and won’t want to derail his return. Winner: Edge.
Winner becomes #1 contender for the Intercontinental Title
- Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk
Mark Bright: The crowd reaction in this match will be most interesting, because I have no idea who they will side with. Rey has definitely lost some popularity since moving away from the Smackdown brand, which is interesting because Smackdown’s ratings themselves fell dramatically in kids and Hispanics when he left that show but that audience didn’t seem to follow him to Raw. Yet he’s still a great babyface in the ring, and someone that has been a majorly pushed star in a traditional babyface sense for several years.
Yet Punk will invariably get great reactions, and has won a World Heavyweight Title this year so might actually be seen as a bigger deal now. And if the crowd do side with him, that’s a major feather in Punk’s cap. I think since he and Regal have hinted at a long-term feud and they’ve sown the seeds for that it seems inevitable that Punk wins, but because it’s Punk with an established star unfortunately the WWE won’t see fit to put him over cleanly, so look for Mike Knox to cost Rey the match and start up a feud between those two. Ugh, poor Rey, just when he got done with Kane.
Phil Lowe: I’m looking forward to this. My fear is that it’s not given enough time (at the expense of the Divas stuff no doubt) but it should be at the very least, a good, solid match. Punk getting the win makes sense here leading to Punk vs. Regal for the IC title. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Mike Knox involved in this. Sucks to be Rey.
Michael Campbell: Hard one to call. I’d go with Rey, because (a) Punk has done nothing but job for three months, and (b) because somehow Punk has the tag title, and has already been up against Regal. While an IC title win would be seen as a step down for Punk (because it comes so soon after dropping the World title), rather than a side-step like the tag belt, it wouldn’t be for Rey. Let’s face it; Rey’s not going to be holding the World title again. He made a big deal about not having held this belt, and he be the perfect baby face to wear Intercontinental gold. Winner: Rey Mysterio
- Batista vs. Randy Orton
Michael Campbell: Orton sure has looked the better man against Batista lately, hasn’t he? While baby face Dave has been booked as a dumb brute, Orton and his faction have been more intelligent, conniving, and earned wins. This is for me, one of the most intriguing bouts on the card. With fans rooting for the heel Orton, I’d have thought he may well take this. Plus, his group needs the momentum. If DiBiase is due back, they may do an angle, though I’d save the swerve of Ted aligning with Orton for a rematch where Dave looks set to win. Winner: Randy Orton.
Phil Lowe: Batista vs. Cena II at WrestleMania 25 has been talked about for ages now, but I think we could see Cena vs. Orton in Houston next Spring. Orton has upped his game considerably and is obviously in the good books of WWE creative. The match itself could be ok, although I can’t say I ever really look forward to watching either unless they’re in there with the right opponent. Interference from Manu and Cody Rhodes is to be expected as well. For me, whoever wins this match will end up facing Cena at WrestleMania.
Mark Bright: I love Orton, and as you will see by the results of the top 100 wrestlers’ poll we’ve been running I’m a far bigger fan of his than anyone else on this site. In the ring I love all the little evil touches he does, he really does come across like a douchebag who will kick you in the head and laugh about it, it doesn’t seem like he’s a guy playing a character on TV like it does for even the other great heels in the company like Edge and Chris Jericho.
The thing is though, he’s set up to lose here as he’s got the upper hand on Batista all the way through their feud on TV so far and Batista, as the babyface who’s entire gimmick the last year and a half has been that he loses the big matches, can’t do with another loss. So even though it’s the wrong thing to do, and it sets back The Legacy right out of the gate, I think Batista wins this one.
- ECW Champion Matt Hardy vs. Vladimir Kozlov in a non-title match
Phil Lowe: The fact its non-title tells you all you need to know. The Russian wins and it won’t be pretty.
Michael Campbell: This isn’t for the ECW title. Therefore, Kozlov will win. Sadly.
Mark Bright: I think despite the awful failure of his match with HHH at Survivor Series and the lack of crowd interest, and his spectacular failure in the Cyber Sunday voting despite HHH really pushing for that match on TV, the WWE are still determined to go all out with Kozlov, so I think he wins cleanly here to continue his monster push. Quality of the match depends on how they book it, I mean Matt probably gave him his best long match in his career during Smackdown’s Beat the Clock challenge but that was partly the booking which allowed them to work the match a certain way which won’t fly on a straight-up match. Should be interesting to see at least.
- Finlay vs. Mark Henry in a Belfast Brawl
Michael Campbell: “Finlay looks to settle this family matter once and for all at Armageddon as he takes on Henry with a major home field advantage, as they will do battle in a Belfast Brawl.” What the fuck? This is what it says on WWE.com. Huh? This PPV is taking place in Belfast? Since when! Grr, what a nonsense quote. Finlay HAS NO ADVANTAGE. The winner’s a toss-up in my book. Should be a fun match though. Winner: Mark Henry.
Phil Lowe: This could actually be fun, providing they keep Hornswoggle and Tony Atlas out of the way and just let Finlay and Henry beat the crap out of each other. This should really be the end of the feud as well, with Henry winning and going back to a singles feud with Matt Hardy over the ECW title.
Mark Bright: Short brawl with Henry getting a win in about 10 minutes is what they should do, and with the Belfast Brawl stipulation they can take some shortcuts in order to get there including a run-in from Hornswoggle that most of the serious wrestling fans on the internet will hate but will get unquestionably the biggest pop of Finlay’s match as it always does.
8-Diva Santa’s Little Helper Match
- Michelle McCool, Maria, Mickie James & Kelly Kelly vs. Victoria, Natalya, Jillian & Maryse
Mark Bright: Maryse is my favourite terrible wrestler in the world, whether it’s shoving McCool off the apron after her Survivor Series elimination or kicking Cherry in the face and laughing about it, she just rules. And Beth is the star of the women’s division and will probably hold things together. But this is a waste of time where the winner will probably be the chick who hangs around backstage with Teddy Long on ECW or the interview girl from Smackdown. Or - and this is how I’d book it - the match is about to start when it’s interrupted for another special Christmas edition of the KHALI KISS KAM~! Tell me that wouldn’t be buys?
Michael Campbell: I love good Women’s wrestling. LOVE it. This is a Santa’s little helper match. This is NOT good wrestling. I have no idea who will win, nor do I care.
Phil Lowe: Seriously, who cares? Unless Gail Kim is debuting here and taking out a bunch of heels, which I don’t see happening, this is just going to be a total waste of time.
