Can GSP vs. Penn break PPV records at UFC 94?

Thursday January 29, 2009 BY Phil Lowe

Saturday night sees current UFC Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre step inside the Octagon to take on reigning lightweight champion B.J. Penn.

Its only late January, but already many believe this could be the fight of 2009.

UFC 94 takes place at the sold-out MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and iFight365.com will bring you all the news and results from the show, which takes place as part of Super Bowl weekend ahead of Super Bowl XLIII on Sunday night.

Penn is moving back up to the 170lbs division for the fight and heads to Vegas seeking revenge for a three-round defeat to GSP back in 2006.

Its the UFC’s third stacked show in as many months and is expected to do over 1million buys in North America.

There’s no doubting that Brock Lesnar’s win over Randy Couture at UFC 91 back in November attracted some new UFC fans, but GSP vs. Penn is a fight that long-term MMA followers have been anxious to see for some time.

In Las Vegas ahead of Saturday night’s card, which also sees Lyoto Machida take on Thiago Silva with both fighters going into their light-heavyweight bout with perfect 13-0 records, UFC president Dana White said he believed UFC 94 will break the company’s PPV buyrate record.

“You are lucky if you are a fight fan and you get to see three or four of these types of fights in your whole lifetime,” said White. This is Hagler vs. Hearns or Leonard vs. Hearns. It is one of these type of fights where both guys are at their absolute prime.

“The winner of this fight will not only be the winner of the first ever fight between two reigning UFC champions, not only win perhaps the biggest fight in UFC history, but will most certainly have a great shot of going down as the greatest fighter of all time.”
