UFC: IMPRESSIVE HENDERSON DEFEATS FRANKLIN TO SET UP TUF FIGHT WITH BISPING

Saturday January 17, 2009 BY Martin Smith

Dan Henderson defeated Rich Franklin by split decision in a technical and challenging fight at UFC 93 in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday night.

Henderson, who will now go head-to-head with Michael Bisping on the next series of The Ultimate Fighter, looked great on the ground and scored well with the judges from the early stages.

He took the scores 29-28 with two judges, while Franklin was given 30-27 by one judge.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for the UK and US. I’m looking forward to the experience,” said Henderson. “It’s right up my alley after being a competitor in the Olympics a couple of times.”

The fight didn’t end without controversy however. Henderson, who was defending well against a Franklin onslaught, accidently poked Franklin in the eye that resulted in a minor stoppage. It came at a time when Franklin was throwing caution to the wind.

It was a slow opening to the fight that started with a number of kicks delivered by both fighters. However, the pace picked up quickly throughout the fight and Henderson showed fantastic ability on the ground.

Henderson took the back in the opening minutes, landing several knees to the body of his opponent. He continued to take Franklin the ground and although he didn’t cause much damage, it was enough to score well with the judges.

Franklin, who has only lost four fights in his career, was cut in the first round in what appeared an accidental headbutt. It didn’t trouble the fighter however, who landed several impressive jabs during the stand up.

It was disappointing defeat for Franklin, but there is no doubt that he will be back stronger than ever in the light-heavyweight division.
