UFC 94 could do record PPV buyrate

Wednesday February 4, 2009 BY Phil Lowe

This past weekend’s UFC 94 PPV could bring the UFC its largest PPV buyrate to date.

The show, which featured welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre vs. UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn in the main event and took place after a huge amount of promotion, drew the UFC’s largest ever attendance for a Las Vegas show.

The UFC and Spike TV aired a three-part “UFC Primetime” series to preview the show at a reported cost of $2million.

But that expense appears to have paid off, with UFC president Dana White saying that he expects the buyrate for the show to be the highest in UFC history.

The current record high for the UFC is thought to be UFC 66 back in December 2006. While the company doesn’t publically release PPV figures, that show, which was headlined by Chuck Liddell beating Tito Ortiz, reportedly did around 1.05 million buys.

White’s statement would give UFC its third major PPV success in as many months. Both UFC 91 (November’s show headlined by Couture vs. Lesnar) and UFC 92 (December’s show headlined by Griffin vs. Evans and Nogueira vs. Mir) are believed to have done over 900,000 buys and could come close to a million.
