UFC 101 confirmed for August 8 with Griffin-Silva and Penn-Florian

Wednesday April 29, 2009 BY Phil Lowe

The UFC have confirmed UFC 101 for August 8 at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, PA.

The pay-per-view will be headlined by a light heavyweight bout between Anderson Silva and Forrest Griffin, along with BJ Penn defending his UFC lightweight title against top-contender Kenny Florian.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Griffin was originally slated to face Thiago Silva at the top of the card, but those plans recently changed.

Silva was heavily criticised after his recent points win over Thales Leites at UFC 97, with President Dana White calling the fight “embarrassing” and “disappointing.”

The Brazilian has stated in the past that he would like to move up a weight class in the future and his wish has been granted for the non-title fight with Griffin.

Whether Thiago Silva will remain on the UFC 101 card should the bout be confirmed remains to be seen.

Ticket details for UFC 101 are to be released shortly.
