Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker square off against each other in front of what is bound to be an energetic Texas crowd. Its the match that many consider to be the true main event of WrestleMania 25 despite no titles being on the line. Can Mr WrestleMania vs. Undertaker’s undefeated streak steal the show tonight?
Mark Bright: Now you’re talking. This is the real main event of this show in my eyes, and has been the one that has been built up the best, even though there’s no doubt who is going to win. Michaels’ “White Undertaker” promo on Smackdown and his mock funeral on the following RAW have been fantastic in showing both the rarely-now-seen cocky side of Michaels that was such a huge part of the original Michaels/Taker feud in 1997.
Taker has also been very good in showing how Shawn has got under his skin and made him angry – so good in fact that on Sunday, the first time Taker will get his hands on Shawn in the match, will be a huge moment. These two, unbelievably since they’re in their 40s, are probably the best workers in the company and I am super excited for this, it’s two legendary stars and if anything expectations are too high so the internet will, I guarantee, be chock full of bitching and complaining about this match come Monday if they do anything less than the greatest pro wrestling match of all time.
But fuck that, I’m simply going to enjoy Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker in a singles match for the first time in 11 years, at a time when they’re both legends, where Shawn can still go, and Taker is as good as he’s ever been, and has added enough new strings to his bow since 1997 that it will be different enough from those matches to avoid comparison, especially to their Hell In A Cell match which is an almost impossible standard to live up to. I think Taker wins to continue the streak, as really the only person in WWE who should break that streak is John Cena, or possibly Randy Orton if he continues rolling onto superstardom over the next year or two. Shawn’s “Mr WrestleMania” nickname is well deserved, as while he’s always great, at WrestleMania he knows it’s the show where legends are made and you really do make memories that last a lifetime, and this will be one of those moments.
I just worry for whatever has to follow this, presuming it doesn’t go on last, because it will be great, the crowd will be going mental, and if, for example, Show/Edge/Cena in a 3way for the love of Vickie has to follow this, and those guys are fucked.
Phil Lowe: The match that, at least for me, is what tonight is all about. While Triple H and Randy Orton may well close the show and be considered the main event, in my eyes this is the true main event of WrestleMania 25.
The streak isn’t being ended, I’m certain of that. But they’ve done a good job of putting doubt into some people’s minds ahead of tonight, with Shawn Michaels showing glimpses of the persona that made him such a cocky little shit back in the 1990s.
Both Michaels and The Undertaker have been fantastic in the build to this. The way Michaels has got into Undertaker’s head has made for great television and I think WWE have done as much as they could to make people think there’s a chance Michaels could end the streak. Of course, I really don’t see the streak ending. But that doesn’t matter tonight, as this will be an awesome, awesome match. You’re almost guaranteed a great match from both of these guys when it counts and tonight should be no exception. I can’t wait for this.
Michael Campbell: It’s crazy how many people want to see this close the show. Really? A match without a title on the line, where there’s absolutely no doubt whatsoever over whom the winner will be?
Ignoring the result, this should be the Match of the Night. Barring some sort of injury, it’s going to be. Taker and Michaels are both consummate professionals, and know how to turn it up a notch at Mania. Plus, this is the one rivalry that’s actually been really good, as the promotion has done a tremendous job of encouraging fans to believe that Michaels has had a chance. The angle that he’s got under Taker’s skin (not literally) like no-one else, has been superbly executed.
Expect these two to pull out all the stops, and for the crowd to go absolutely nuts for this. I’d also like to point out that I called this for WrestleMania 25, like two years ago. Winner: Undertaker.
Dan Short: There is only one match this year that I have any sort of interest in. It features two of the finest performers ever in the company, and frankly in the business. Both have a rich history in WrestleMania that is everlasting. And the build to this match has been nothing short of great. And even without the build, just putting these two against one another at WrestleMania is more than enough for fans to drool over.
Shawn Michaels is Mr. WrestleMania. He made his first WrestleMania appearance with Marty Jannetty at WrestleMania V, but it was in the opening match of WrestleMania VIII against Tito Santana that laid the foundations for what would become a majestic run. The ladder match with Razor Ramon at WrestleMania X. The Iron Man Match with Bret Hart at WrestleMania XII, which I was there for. Fighting through the pain in his back to wrestle Steve Austin at WrestleMania XIV. Staging a historic comeback against Chris Jericho at WrestleMania XIX. Hanging in there with Kurt Angle at WrestleMania 21. And was more recently being Ric Flair’s final opponent at WrestleMania XXIV.
The Undertaker holds an undefeated streak that has no equal. He has competed in sixteen WrestleMania events and has never lost. The who’s who of opponents he defeated is quite legendary. “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Giant Gonzalez, King Kong Bundy, Diesel, Sycho Sid, Kane, Big Bossman, Triple H, Ric Flair, Big Show, A-Train, Randy Orton, Mark Henry, Batista, and Edge. Three of those matches for either the WWE or World Heavyweight Championship. One was a Hell in a Cell Match. One was a Handicap Match. One was a Casket Match. No matter the odds, Undertaker has managed to overcome and maintain victory over his opponents.
This is a tough one to call. It very much comes down to whether or not Undertaker has another ride left in him. He is mere months away from celebrating twenty years as the character, having remained faithful and loyal to the WWE through all the ups and downs. He has proven time and again that WrestleMania is just as much his show as it is Shawn Michaels’ show. I get the feeling that there’s no reason for Undertaker’s streak to come to an end any time soon. I would not be surprised if Shawn won, but I’m sticking with the Dead Man. Adding Shawn Michaels’ name to the list and having what will likely be a stellar match for the ages; it would truly be the ultimate accomplishment for the streak and his career.
James Mustoe: This has been my favourite match from a build up perspective, and should also be the best match on the card by a considerable margin. This is the one match on the show that hasn’t been done to death in the ring in the previous weeks, and has gained greatly from it. People have been clamouring for this match ever since Michaels and Taker’s stellar exchanges in the 2007 and 2008 Royal Rumbles and the main event at No Way Out 2007, and the WWE wasn’t stupid enough in this case to give in to the pressure and give the match away early in order to pop a rating.
I could never see Shawn winning this as he really has nothing to gain from victory and I believe Taker should never lose his streak unless it’s to a young up and comer who can really benefit from a victory. My thoughts on Shawn losing have been backed up by the build to this match which has seen HBK outwit Taker consistently, via some awesome skits and promos. I expect this to be match of the night and a possible match of the year contender.
