DVD Review: UFC – Best of 2008
A DVD that features some of the biggest stars from the UFC is guaranteed to be a good buy for a UFC fan. Here, we get to see the best of 2008, with some of the year’s best fights being shown to us in this two disc DVD. It’s the second instalment of the series, after Zuffa released the “Best of 2007″ last year. However, while that DVD featured several interesting undercard bouts that fans of the sport may not have seen, this DVD is based around the year’s title fights and co-main events. While that is disappointing, you have to wonder how many of these fights genuine fans of the sport won’t have seen.
Still, it’s great to remember what a special year it was for the UFC. The fights here are great, with some back and forth action and some interesting title victories. My personal favourite – Quinton Jackson vs. Forrest Griffin – is included, as is the great brawl between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir and the awesome fight between Mir and Antonio Nogueira.
However, you can’t help but feel that the UFC haven’t given us even half of what 2008 was all about. We’re missing a war between Paul Kelly and Paul Taylor, a great technical battle between Jon Fitch and Georges St. Pierre and a number of other fights don’t make the list because they weren’t the main event. That really annoys me, but I suppose we should be thankful that we get all the big main events from the year on two discs.
We also get several interesting video packages that feature Evan Tanner, Anderson Silva, the Fight for the Troops and the Ultimate Fighter. The Evan Tanner one is great and although I felt all four could’ve been longer, they did their job well and where nice features to the DVD.
However, it falls flat once again and you can’t help but wonder why this year’s DVD was an hour shorter than last years. It just didn’t hook me as much as it should have and it all felt a little flat. Maybe it was the fact that I’d seen all the fights and last year’s undercard fights were highlighted. I’m not sure, but this didn’t keep my attention for more than twenty minutes a time.
This DVD is great if you haven’t bought any of the years DVD’s from 2008. All the years main feuds, battles and title fights on two discs sounds like a very good deal to me. Of course, it’s not so good if you have already bought several of the events and you’re watching re-runs of content that you have already bought. Either way, it’s a nice little DVD, but it does have its exceptions if you’re a die-hard fan.
I’d recommend it for people who have a passing interest in the UFC. Die-hards might hate this and find it boring, but this sort of DVD will be great for new fans of the sport or fans who want to see how their favourite fighters did in their title fights.
A good DVD and one that is more than worth its price – but only if you’re new to the sport.
