Lesnar and Mir on alert after Velasquez batters Kongo at UFC 99
Cain Velasquez was in great form as he defeated Cheick Kongo in the co-main event at UFC 99 on Saturday night.
Velasquez dominated throughout the bout, although Kongo could have won it early when he rocked Velasquez with two punches that would have put other fighters down and out.
But that was Kongo’s only really shining light in a bout that saw Velasquez give his opponent one heck of a beating en route to a unanimous points win.
Velasquez was in control throughout the three rounds, exposing Kongo’s weak ground game.
There had been talk of Kongo suffering from a knee problem going into the UFC’s first ever event in Germany, and if that is the case, it could be partially used to blame for a sub-standard showing.
But take nothing away from Velasquez, who was dominate and leaves Cologne knowing that although he still has some fights to win before he is truly in the heavyweight title picture, the door is well and truly open for him to challenge Brock Lesnar or Frank Mir somewhere down the line.
