WWE Extreme Rules PPV preview (Part 2 of 2)
WWE present Extreme Rules tonight on pay-per-view and iFight365.com will have full, live coverage as it happens from around 7.30pm EST/12.30am BST.
Ahead of the show, we’re taking a look ahead to how the night may pan out with a two-part bumper PPV preview courtesy of Mark Bright, Phil Lowe and Michael Campbell.
Part One of our preview is already online and as we count down the hours to the PPV going live, we’re taking a look at the remaining four matches scheduled to take place tonight…
Ladder Match for the World Heavyweight Championship
- Edge (C) vs. Jeff Hardy
Michael Campbell: This is the bout that the majority of fans perceive as the main event of the evening. However, unless Jeff is winning the belt, I don’t see it finishing the show and given the apathy towards Batista, that’s a sad fact.
Anyways, this is really intriguing because the winner is totally up in the air. Edge hasn’t held the belt for very long (though he never does) and this could be his time. But if ever there was a perfect situation for Jeff to take the gold, it’s in this ladder match. But, if the rumours are true that he wants to leave again, then would the WWE be willing to give him a run that the fans are desperate for, first? Perhaps as an incentive to stay? Or would the bitterness and bad feeling prevail? Or is it all a smark-swerving work? I’m going to optimistically predict that Hardy wins, if only because it may be the last chance he’ll get, and it could make for an interesting summer. Winner: Jeff Hardy.
Mark Bright: This should be fucking awesome. The build has been fantastic, both in terms of promo work, with this weeks Cutting Edge segment standing out on that score, and in-ring interaction, with Hardy beating Edge in a very good non-title singles match as well as some good tag team matches. That, plus their history and the WWE production team’s excellent work with video packages, will give this a big match feel. The two guys have talked this up in media interviews as being a match that they’ve looked forward to for a long time and want to provide the fans with a lasting memory. The action should be fantastic and the fact that Hardy’s contractual status is up in the air adds another layer of intrigue to the booking of this match.
The story seems perfect for Hardy to get the win, since Edge has talked about how he always beats Hardy no matter how much Jeff adds himself to highlight reels, and that’s the kind of heelish theory that you expect the babyface to prove wrong. And considering this is the match that made both guys famous, there’s a certain poetic justice to blowing off their feud here.
Jeff possibly leaving makes you think that the WWE won’t put the belt on him even if it’s for a short run, or maybe they just feel confident enough that he’ll stay – and given that Edge is a great choice for World Champion it’s certainly not the kind of thing that will be a major booking snafu if the champion retains here.
I’m going to predict Hardy to win, given that I think he deserves a memorable title win, and I think he’ll stay – maybe even agreeing to a short term deal to stay possibly through SummerSlam or Survivor Series with a sabbatical to follow. But the “strike while the iron is hot” philosophy is something the WWE have ignored with Jeff Hardy once before, and I don’t think they’ll make that mistake again.
Phil Lowe: This will be fantastic. How can a match with Edge, Jeff Hardy and a ladder possibly disappoint? The build has been real good and their previous matches have been real good. Obviously a lot of the talk going into Sunday night is whether Jeff has agreed to ink a new deal with the WWE. Personally, I think regardless of whether or not he has agreed to stay, Edge wins here. If Hardy is on the way out, a crazy bump off the ladder could be on the cards. Actually even if Hardy is staying, a crazy bump off the ladder could be on the cards.
I’d like to see CM Punk cash in his title shot at the conclusion of the match. Its Extreme Rules and I think Punk coming down after Edge or Hardy win and announcing an Extreme stipulation there and then would be original and pretty cool to do. While unlikely and while I’d like to see Edge remaining as champion for a while longer, if Hardy is leaving the company, moving Punk up the ladder (see what I did there?) would make sense.
Steel Cage Match for the WWE Title
- Randy Orton (C) vs. Batista
Mark Bright: Boy, did Batista ever look like a complete fucking tool on Monday or what? He’s stood there crying while Legacy are beating down Ric Flair, and Orton is punting Flair in the head after Dave begs him not to. The entire crowd is thinking “why the FUCK is Dave not climbing the cage and saving his best friend,” and that’s not the thing people should be thinking about their heroic lead babyface. And you know what else? I think Orton is winning here, which will make Dave look like an even bigger loser.
Besides that, the booking has been very basic in that their last match saw the heel look to take every cheap way out there is to overcome the monster babyface and now said babyface gets another shot inside a cage. I suspect the WWE may relax their no-blood rule for this match between two of the golden children, as they really need something to make this match and Batista beating Orton bloody will at least give the fans (and Batista’s character) some sense of satisfaction, which is needed since putting the belt on him is a move I would be stunned if it had even been discussed much less have a chance of actually happening.
Michael Campbell: Orton has been absolutely magnificent since WrestleMania 25, despite being booked overly weak in an attempt to ensure fans don‘t cheer for him. However, Big Dave just isn’t a good opponent for him right now. He’s ridiculously stale. I do not look forward to this one, nor do I care. Providing Orton retains, it’s all good. I don’t see a Triple H return just yet, but I certainly would guess there will be hijinks and another uncertain finish. Winner: Randy Orton.
Phil Lowe: I just can’t get excited about this match. If I was Orton, I’d climb the cage as soon as the match starts as we all know after watching Raw that Big Dave can’t climb cages. I don’t see Orton losing the belt until Triple H returns, so Batista is going to look like a total loser tonight. There’s only three weeks until the next PPV (which is a total joke) so I’d expect a couple of weeks of Batista beating up Legacy ahead of a rematch at The Bash.
Extreme Rules Match for the ECW Title
- Christian (C) vs. Jack Swagger vs. Tommy Dreamer
Michael Campbell: This one is lost in the mix, especially being a “hardcore” match. On a gimmick card where every other match has no disqualifications anyway, that stip is pretty lame. Plus, any inventiveness will be saved for the Rey/Jericho bout, and this will probably be a standard run-through of three-way spots, with Dreamer using a Kendo stick or trashcan. The upside is that no-one will expect anything from this three-way, making it easier for all three guys to just go out and work. I’d imagine Christian will retain by pinning Tommy Dreamer though, retiring him and avoiding Swagger jobbing. Putting the belt on Dreamer would be nuts, and diluting a title win for Swagger in Dreamer’s last match would be pointless. Expect a babyface handshake. Winner: Christian.
Mark Bright: I can’t wait for this match to be over because it will also mean the end of Tommy Dreamer’s career. I can’t believe that fat waster from the indies with his no talent and his crying like a pussy promos has had an 8 year career wrestling in the WWE considering all the talented people they’ve fired in that time.
His zero good matches (and that includes the smoke and mirrors ECW matches), his zero good promos (Raven talking about Dreamer is not a great Dreamer promo), and his general suck means it will be a happy day in my house when he retires and I don’t have to watch him any more. And losing out to a pure wrestler like Jack Swagger in his own hardcore environment is the perfect “fuck off and don’t come back” message. I know some people will be wanting him to retire with the Trish Stratus title win fairytale ending, but the difference is Trish was an entertaining and valuable part of the company for several years – something which doesn’t apply to Dreamer – and to be honest he’s lucky to be getting PPV time to ride off into the sunset with.
Put the belt on Swagger and have him and Christian have one more big match, maybe even give them a 45 minute Iron Man match on ECW TV as a bigtime blowoff considering the ECW match usually only gets 8 minutes or so on a PPV. That’s not enough for the feud those two have had, as I’d like Swagger to move onto different opponents such as Evan Bourne, while Christian can still be there in the background and you can go back to him and Swagger in time for next WrestleMania.
Phil Lowe: An Extreme Rules match on an Extreme Rules show and I fear this match will be quickly forgotten about – not because it will be a bad match but because of the all-stipulation card. Edge/Hardy, Rey/Jericho and even the four-way match could all be potential showstealers while the one of the best feuds in WWE today in Christian-Swagger pays the price for being on the third most important show (arguably fourth behind Superstars).
I think Dreamer is going to end up staying, but ultimately I don’t think your average casual fan really cares about him, so even if its for nostalgic purposes and to give the few remainding ECW hardcores something to pop for, is a short ECW title run really worth it? Some will argue Dreamer deserves it, but while he’s been reliable for WWE and done plenty behind the scenes, I don’t see the point of putting the title on him. For me, either Christian or Swagger win here with the plan heading towards Summerslam being for them to go their own ways into new feuds.
No Holds Barred Match for the Intercontinental Championship
- Rey Mysterio (C) vs. Chris Jericho
Michael Campbell: This has been one of the TV highlights of recent months and their PPV collision at Judgement Day was stellar (if a little short). The stip should actually benefit this bout, because both hombres are so creative. Although he doesn’t really “need” the IC title as such, I think Jericho’s going to raise it here, to further the feud. Rey is astonishing chasing the gold rather than wearing it, and I’d love to see this rivalry continue all summer. Perhaps with Rey in pursuit, we’ll be treated to a proper Mask vs. Title match at Summerslam. Winner: Chris Jericho.
Mark Bright: This has been a fantastic feud so far, with Jericho focusing on Rey’s mask and you have to give credit to Jim Ross and to a lesser extent Todd Grisham for getting across how important the mask is to Rey specifically and to luchadors in general – something which is almost never mentioned in his WWE career. Jericho taking the character of the guy who runs down the fans and sees them as hypocrites and liars makes him the perfect opponent for Rey, who, especially with the child-heavy audience on SmackDown, has always had huge fan support and makes himself seem like a man of the people.
Their Judgement Day match was really good and the further heat to their feud, in particular Jericho’s attack on Rey when he posed as a fan last week and Rey’s revenge attack on Jericho this week after, was done fantastically as well. You’ve got two great wrestlers, one a clear cut babyface, the other a clear cut heel and a personal issue between them that fans buy into. With all those ingredients in place, if this match is anything other than really good it will be a disappointment.
For the finish, I think they should borrow from Mexico. With Jericho constantly focusing on the importance of Rey’s mask and Rey pointing out that without that mask, he’s not Rey Mysterio, I think they should do the finish where Jericho is able to rip Rey’s mask off, and Rey covers his face and drops to the mat to get pinned before scurrying to the back before his identity can be “revealed” (yes I know he wrestled without a mask in WCW for their last couple of years, but that was so long ago as to be irrelevant to this issue as lots of the younger fans weren’t watching wrestling then, and even of those who were watching wrestling back then, its doubtful they were watching the dying days of WCW, I know I personally had given up by then). This would both put the title on the heel so Rey can chase, and also further hammer home to the fans just how important Rey’s mask is to him, so that if he puts the mask on the line later in the year, hopefully that will be a really huge deal.
Phil Lowe: These two guys are a big part of why Smackdown is the best wrestling show on TV today – by far. Rey, Jericho, Edge, Jeff Hardy and CM Punk have made the blue brand the best two hours of weekly TV since the Heyman-booked ‘Smackdown Six’ days several years ago. Did you ever think you’d say that about a show with Todd Grisham calling the action? Credit to Grisham as well as he and Ross work really well together and Todd more than holds his own.
This feud has been great and I don’t see it ending tonight. The build has been just awesome in places, with the highlight being the sneak-attack by Jericho on Rey when posing as a kid in a Mysterio mask. A match with the mask on the line at Summerslam has been heavily discussed and makes sense. I’d expect Jericho to win tonight but failing to pull the mask off completely. I’ve no doubts that the mask will be torn to some degree, with Mysterio covering up so we can’t see his face. In a non-PG WWE Universe, I’d have suggested Rey juicing heavily so the blood covers up the bits of his face exposed by the torn mask, but even on an Extreme Rules PPV, that ain’t going to happen.
