TNA Turning Point PPV review – Glimpses of TNA at it’s very best

Monday November 16, 2009 BY Garrett Kidney

TNA haven’t offered a really great PPV since Genesis in January but after months of varying between terrible (Victory Road) and good (Bound For Glory), TNA have finally struck gold again. So lets get to it:

The Amazing Red beat Homicide to retain the X-Division Title

Really fun opener with some really good fast paced stuff. While I’d prefer to see the X-Division featured further up the card, this was still the perfect match to start the show with and get the crowd going. I can see this feud continuing as there’s not really a ready made opponent for Red. 7/10

Sarita, Taylor Wilde and ODB beat The Beautiful People to retain all their titles

This was fine for what it was with Taylor and Sarita standing out and Lacey Von Erich being kept out of the ring for the most part. I know I’ve said this before but I don’t really see where Taylor and Sarita go from here unless they continue working with The Beautiful People. The Knockout Tag titles are good in theory but they don’t really work in practise as there aren’t enough established teams. 3.5/10

The British Invasion beat Beer Money and The Motor City Machine Guns to retain the TNA World Tag Team titles

At least one match was destined to fall victim to crazy overbooking and unfortunately this one was it. This match was going along really nicely with some good action until interference from EY and Nash completely killed all the momentum it had built up. The Guns seemed to just disappear and The British Invasion capitalised on the interference to retain. The upside is that potential British Invasion matches against Beer Money and The Guns should be good. 6/10

Tara beat Awesome Kong in a Six Sides of Steel Cage Match

Good stuff here and the best Knockouts match since Hamada vs. Daffney a few months ago. Two big spots were a powerbomb on Kong by Tara and a Cross Body off the top of the cage by Tara. I would’ve preferred to see Kong win and face ODB next but I hope they come back to Kong vs. Tara once Tara wins the title. 6.5/10

Team 3D and Rhino beat Hernandez, Matt Morgan and ‘The Pope’ D’Angelo Dinero

Strange result as I really thought 3D and Rhino would lose but I have no problem with it if the feud continues for another month. Dinero looks more and more like a star every time I see him. He has great potential and TNA should keep a keen eye on him. 7/10

Scott Steiner beat Bobby Lashley in a Falls Count Anywhere, No DQ Match

It was a good idea to give these two the gimmick to help them through it though the actual in ring aspect of the match was pretty good. Both guys tried really hard (as Steiner always does in fairness to him) and Steiner’s Frankensteiner was a highlight (even if it did nearly kill him). Because Steiner won I see a return match next month, Last Man Standing maybe. 7/10

Kurt Angle beat Desmond Wolfe

Fantastic match. This was a technical masterpiece. Angle’s six German Suplexes were spectacular and Wolfe matched him all the way. I didn’t think Wolfe would win, mainly because it would have made Matt Morgan look really bad but he was in no way whatsoever damaged by the loss. This was a Match of the Year candidate and a match which everybody should try to see. I’d love to see a rematch. 10/10

AJ Styles defeated Samoa Joe and Daniels to retain the TNA World Heavyweight title

Epic, epic stuff. While it wasn’t as good as Unbreakable, it doesn’t matter. This was the best main event this year bar none (that’s what Dragon Gate get for not putting Shingo/Richards in the main event). Loads of creative and innovative spots which involved all three men which all came off without a problem. Great to see AJ pull out the Fosbury Flop for the occasion. The action just kept on coming thick and fast with all three men rising to the occasion and putting on a match worthy of Match of the Year nominations. It looks like Daniels might be fully turning heel and a Styles vs. Daniels match next month would be very much appreciated. 10/10

The top two matches are just glimpses of what TNA could and probably should be. They were two absolutely outstanding matches, perhaps the best consecutive matches on a show that I’ve ever seen and are matches that every single wrestling fan, whether a fan of TNA or not, should go as far out of their way as possible to see.
