Machida landed a barrage of punches that sent Evans reeling up against the cage and finished him off with a left hand that folded Evans backwards onto the canvas.
“I’ve tried all my life to become a champion and I am very, very happy,” a jubilant Machida said. “Now I’m going to keep this belt for a long time.”

It was a show that perhaps looked solid on paper but had not captured the imagination as a result of several weeks of unspectacular WWE programming - especially on Monday night’s.
But Sunday night’s Judgment Day PPV was a good (at times great) show which saw Hall of Famer Ric Flair return to make the save for Batista, while Rey Mysterio and Chris Jericho tore down the house in their Intercontinental title clash. When Chuck Liddell enters the cage at UFC 97, the rumours surrounding a possible retirement will fall on his 205lb shoulders. Liddell, with three defeats in his past four fights, will be taking on former PRIDE superstar Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in a highly anticipated battle.
The fight has all the hallmarks of a good fight, with both struggling to reach the sort of form that made them one of the best fighters on the planet. Liddell, the former UFC light heavyweight champion, has become somewhat of a shadow of his former glory, with his last performance against Rashad Evans widely regarded as his poorest fight to date.
