Lyle Beerbohm and Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro Verbally Agree To May 15th Strikeforce Bout

The card is rapidly filling up for Strikeforce’s next Showtime event, which takes place on May 15th at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, MO as MMA Junkie is reporting that a Lightweight bout between undefeated top prospect Lyle “Fancypants” Beerbohm and Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro has been verbally agreed to for the event, with bout agreements expected to be signed shortly.

Beerbohm has fought three times for Strikeforce, defeating Ray Perrales by submission, Rafaello Oliveira by TKO and Duane Ludwig via submission, with his last fight coming outside of Strikeforce at an Arena Rumble card where he knocked out Josh Martin with elbows in under ninety seconds. Beerbohm currently holds a 13-0 record and signed a multi-fight contract with the promotion last October.

Ribeiro is the proud holder of an equally sterling 20-3 record, but has gone just 1-2 in his last three bouts in Japan, dropping a 2007 K-1 Hero’s bout to Gesias Calvancante before coming back in 2009 to defeat Katsuhiko Nagata on a doctor’s stoppage at DREAM 8 in April of last year. That victory was followed by a unanimous decision loss to Shinya Aoki as part of the DREAM 10 card last July.

WEC 47 Drug Test Results Released

The drug testing results from the WEC 47 event held earlier this month at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, OH have been released by the Ohio Athletic Commission and all six of the twenty-two fighters who competed on the card that were tested have passed their tests and come back clean.

Along with former WEC Bantamweight Champion Brian Bowles and newly-crowned titleholder Dominick Cruz, Joseph Benavidez, LC Davis, Javier Vazquez and Bart Palaszewski were all tested for drugs of abuse like cocaine, marijuana and others, as well as for performance enhancing drugs like steroids and masking agents for said drugs.

WEC 47 saw Cruz defeat Bowles by TKO at the end of the second round when Bowles was unable to answer the bell due to a broken hand, while Benavidez submitted former WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres in the second round of their co-main event bout after opening up a massive cut on Torres’ forehead with an elbow strike.

Jake Shields Could Find New Challenges In The UFC In The Future If He Gets Past Dan Henderson

Current Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields will face his toughest test in quite some time when he makes his first title defense against former PRIDE and UFC superstar Dan Henderson as part of the CBS primetime card on April 17th in Nashville, TN, but according to Shields’ latest words to GracieMag, he may look elsewhere for new challenges should be he be able to get past Henderson;

“I’m a fighter who takes it one opponent at a time and my next fight is in Strikeforce against (Dan) Henderson. When you talk about guys like Anderson Silva and St.-Pierre, the best in the world, obviously I fight want to fight them. I want to be the best in the world and to be the best you have to beat the best. GSP’s a complete fighter standing and on the ground. But that’s why I want to fight him, that’s the challenge. I want to test my skills and see what happens. Now I’m focused on Dan Henderson for this fight and after that my contract with Strikeforce ends. I’ll talk with Strikeforce and the UFC to find out which one I will work for.”

Shields has won thirteen straight fights including a victory over former WEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit, an EliteXC Welterweight Championship victory over current UFC fighter Paul Daley and his most recent decision win over MMA veteran and MTV personality Jason “Mayhem” Miller that earned Shields the Strikeforce 185-pound belt. Steve Austin On TNA: “It’s A Totally Different Product”

Last night’s RAW guest host, Stone Cold Steve Austin, recently appeared on Hardcore Sports Radio. When asked about WWE RAW and TNA iMPACT now facing off on Monday nights, he had this to say:

“I don’t know if we’ll ever re-create that Nitro-Raw war. WCW kicked our ass for two years, then we smoked their ass and never looked back and put them out of business.

“I wish the TNA people all the luck in the world because it means more of the boys have jobs and it gives fans an alternative.

“I don’t think anyone will ever come close to really giving true competition to WWE because they’re so far ahead of the game, they’re rooted in their system, and they’re a winner.

“I wish TNA all the luck in the world, but it’s a totally different product.”

- The dark main event after last night’s RAW saw Rey Mysterio defeat CM Punk with the 619 in a 10 minute match. Mysterio celebrated with the fans after the win. The match was made official after CM Punk came out during the commercial break before the Bret Hart & Vince McMahon contract signing to challenge Rey.

- Batista was legitimately busted open last night by Kofi Kingston during their match on RAW.

Jake Shields Open To Coming To UFC In Future.

Current Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields has come out and said that his Strikeforce contract expires after his upcoming fight with Dan Henderson, and that we would consider going to the UFC. Here’s the quote, via Graciemag:

“When you talk about guys like Anderson Silva and St.-Pierre, the best in the world, obviously I fight want to fight them. I want to be the best in the world and to be the best you have to beat the best. GSP’s a complete fighter standing and on the ground. But that’s why I want to fight him, that’s the challenge. I want to test my skills and see what happens. Now I’m focused on Dan Henderson for this fight and after that my contract with Strikeforce ends. I’ll talk with Strikeforce and the UFC to find out which one I will work for.”

It seems like Shields is setting up some tough contract negotiations but they could be derailed with a loss to Henderson. A victory over Henderson, which would put Shield’s win streak at 14, would certainly make people take notice and would make Shields pay much higher. Will it happen? We’ll find out on April 17.

Miguel Torres Shows He Still Has A Sense Of Humor

Former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres (37-3) posted this on his Twitter site today after filling out paperwork at the doctors office prior to having his head stitched up.

Torres received the cut to his forehead on March 6th at the “WEC 47: Bowles vs. Cruz” event against Joseph Benavidez, suffering a second straight loss, just the third in forty professional fights.

Strikeforce CEO Say’s Cung Le Could Face Frank Shamrock In June

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker spoke about a possible re-match between former Strikeforce middleweight champs Cung Le (6-1) and Frank Shamrock (23-10-2) for June.

“The fight with Cung and Scott was an amazing fight,” Coker said. “I know Cung would like that rematch, and I’m sure Scott would like that fight again at some point.

“We haven’t locked that down yet, but that will be determined soon. If that fight happens, it will happen in late June.”

Le and Shamrock faced one another in March of 2008 for the Strikeforce middleweight title. Le walked away with the belt after breaking Shamrock’s arm in the third round of their fight. Since that time Le abdicated the title in order to follow his budding acting career. In his eventual return to the cage, Le faced Scott Smith last December, suffering his first career loss via TKO in the third round.

Shamrock, who serves as a fight analyst on Strikeforce’s network TV broadcast team, faced Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz last April at a catchweight of 179 lbs in the headliner for “Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz” event. Diaz earned a TKO victory, putting Shamrock down in the second round.
