With 2010 upon us, we thought we’d share with you our favourite moments from the MMA scene in 2009.
MMA enjoyed huge success throughout the year, with several fighters going on to become world class athletes. The highlights were endless – Team UK impressed during season nine of The Ultimate Fighter, Kimbo Slice made his UFC debut, Dan Hardy sent shockwaves through the welterweight division, Team England impressed in the M1 Challenge and Affliction suffered in similar fashion to the PRIDE organisation.

Lightweight champion BJ Penn dominated Diego Sanchez en route to a fifth-round TKO at UFC 107 on Saturday night.
Sanchez, who had never been stopped before, was simply outgunned and outmatched. He did not complain when the one-sided fight was finally halted due to a massive gash on his forehead.
Penn (15-5-1) was cool and calm, blunting Sanchez’s attacks while using his superior striking to punish the challenger. When Sanchez came forward, Penn made him pay. The Hawaiian used his agility and balance to stuff Sanchez’s takedown attempts before a pumped-up crowd…

Late last week, HBO, which is not only a premium channel on your cable dial but also a major distributor of pay-per-view programming, announced that it had attained at least 1.25 million pay-per-view buys for the Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fight, generating about $70 million in gross revenue.
For Floyd Mayweather’s “comeback” fight against Juan Manuel Marquez a couple of months ago, they declared a little over a million buys, producing roughly $52 million. The fight between Mayweather and Ricky Hatton did 920,000 buys. When Pacquiao fought Oscar De La Hoya, there were 1.2 million buyers announced…

When a phenom bursts on to any sports scene, it usually takes time for them to seize the championship mantle. For Michael Jordan, it took six years before he was an NBA Champion. Sometimes, as is the case with Tiger Woods, it takes just a year to cement his first Grand Slam victory as he did in 1997 with a win at The Masters. That’s why the ascension of Brock Lesnar to UFC infamy is so intriguing.
Brock Lesnar became the UFC Heavyweight Champion in his first year of UFC combat, dismantling the legend of Randy Couture at UFC 91 on November 15th, 2008. Since then, Lesnar has patiently waited for a worthy opponent to…

Brock Lesnar retained the UFC heavyweight title by stopping Frank Mir in the second round and Georges St. Pierre put on the performance of his career in blanking Thiago Alves at UFC 100 Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Lesnar took Mir down and pounded him with rights along the cage, forcing referee Herb Dean to stop it at 1:48 of the second.
After the win, Lesnar made an obscene gesture to the crowd with both hands.
St. Pierre, who was all class, won by scores of 50-45, 50-45 and 50-44…
